The focus of the Norwalk Housing Authority Learning Centers’ literacy program is to help elementary school age children grow their confidence as independent readers and learners. It’s a comprehensive reading and writing program with structured outcomes. The program utilizes Ticket to Read assessment, identify skills each child needs to practice for proficiency at phonemic awareness, decoding, blending, word patterns, vocabulary, and grammar.
Students acquire sight vocabulary, develop decoding strategies, and practice during meaningful and enjoyable encounters with printed material. They receive instruction in phonics, word study, fluency, and learn grammar rules that apply to writing and speaking.
Our outcomes for the Summer 2015 are:
- Rising 1st graders – 85% of students maintained or improved their literacy skills in vocabulary, comprehension and fluency
- Rising 2nd graders – 90% of students maintained or improved their literacy skills in vocabulary, comprehension and fluency
- Rising 3rd graders – 95% of students maintained or improved their literacy skills in vocabulary, comprehension and fluency
